36 The Essentials: Western Sicily & Agrigento, Italy

Western Sicily and the Agrigento area offer travel advisors a more layered and less traveled way to position Sicily for clients who want something beyond the island's well-known eastern circuit. The Trapani area's salt ponds, Arab-influenced towns, medieval hilltop villages, and coastal archaeological sites pair naturally with Agrigento's slower tempo, deep Greek heritage, and access to genuine rural experiences that are difficult to replicate elsewhere on the island. Dario Piparo, co-founder of Essence of Sicily, a boutique destination management company based in Agrigento, brings eight generations of roots on the island and a deeply personal understanding of its western and southern regions to the conversation. He walks through what makes Western Sicily distinct from the rest of the island, how to frame it for first-time versus returning visitors, how to structure itineraries that span both the Trapani area and Agrigento, what the growing hospitality landscape looks like and how to set client expectations accordingly, what activity options exist for more active travelers, and how to build a client brief that allows a DMC partner to produce something truly personalized. Travel advisors will come away with a stronger framework for positioning this region, practical language for managing expectations, and a clearer picture of how Western Sicily and Agrigento can elevate an Italy itinerary in a way few destinations can.

Key Takeaways

  • How to position Sicily as a standalone destination rather than a quick add-on to a Rome, Florence, or Venice itinerary

  • When to route clients through Western Sicily on a Palermo-to-Agrigento transfer to layer in meaningful experiences without adding overnights

  • How to qualify clients for this region based on their appetite for authenticity, local immersion, and off-the-beaten-path travel

  • What to consider when structuring a multi-night itinerary split between the Trapani area and Agrigento

  • What details to share with a DMC partner to produce an itinerary that is genuinely personalized rather than templated

Undiscovered Sunsets was a long time in the making, even if I myself didn’t realize it. During my time at the University of Northern Iowa, I studied abroad in New Zealand. Upon graduating, I bought a one-way ticket to France, lived with a French family and studied with classmates from Turkey, China, Russia, Germany, Italy, and everywhere in between. In 2010 I began teaching English as a foreign language. This job quickly took me to China, where English teachers were in high demand and within three years, I began working in a 5-star hotel, speaking Mandarin throughout most of my day. In total, I lived abroad for 7 years.

I consider Undiscovered Sunsets to be the perfect mélange of my personal experience traveling the world and my professional experience working in the hospitality industry.

I look forward to designing your next adventure!
