23 The Essentials: Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux is one of France's most layered and rewarding regions, but it takes more than a love of wine to plan it well. France specialist Livy Leroy, General Manager of Essentially French, unpacks what travel advisors actually need to know to design a Bordeaux itinerary that goes beyond the obvious. She walks through how seasonality shapes the experience, why harvest season is a category of its own, and how to read a client's relationship with wine before you start building their trip. She also covers the geography of the appellations, how purchasing wine actually works, and the conversations that help you decide between city center and countryside accommodations. Travel advisors will come away with a clear framework for personalizing a Bordeaux itinerary, whether the client is a curious first-timer or a serious collector.

Key Takeaways

  • How to set client expectations around harvest, participation, limitations, and how to frame the energy of the region

  • Why day trips from Bordeaux city center are almost always the smarter logistical move

  • What to ask clients before building their Bordeaux trip: wine relationship, buying habits, label vs. authenticity, and access preferences

  • City center vs. countryside accommodations, and why a split stay often works better than picking one base

  • How Bordeaux compares to other French wine regions, and why it works across all levels of wine enthusiasm

Undiscovered Sunsets was a long time in the making, even if I myself didn’t realize it. During my time at the University of Northern Iowa, I studied abroad in New Zealand. Upon graduating, I bought a one-way ticket to France, lived with a French family and studied with classmates from Turkey, China, Russia, Germany, Italy, and everywhere in between. In 2010 I began teaching English as a foreign language. This job quickly took me to China, where English teachers were in high demand and within three years, I began working in a 5-star hotel, speaking Mandarin throughout most of my day. In total, I lived abroad for 7 years.

I consider Undiscovered Sunsets to be the perfect mélange of my personal experience traveling the world and my professional experience working in the hospitality industry.

I look forward to designing your next adventure!
