28 The Essentials: Athens, Greece

Athens gets underestimated. Most travelers pass through it, a night before the islands, a quick tick on the bucket list, and leave without ever seeing what the city actually is. Aris Mitropoulos knows better. Born and raised in Athens, and now the founder of Nostos Greece, he's spent years watching travelers shortchange one of Europe's most layered, alive, and culturally rich cities.

In this episode, Aris walks through everything a Travel Advisor needs to redesign how they pitch Athens. From the right number of nights to the neighborhoods worth exploring, the seasonal windows that matter, and the day trips that turn a city stop into a journey with real depth. He covers the Acropolis (of course), but also rooftop dining, food tours, coastal drives, and the kind of local experiences that make repeat clients say they finally got Greece.

Key Takeaways

  • How to position Athens as a multi-night anchor, not just a layover before the islands

  • The best seasons to send clients, and why spring and fall consistently outperform summer

  • Which experiences to lead with, from iconic Acropolis visits to rooftop dinners and immersive food tours

  • How to build out the itinerary with day trips to Delphi, Nafplio, and nearby islands

  • How to go deeper for repeat clients through niche cultural, culinary, and neighborhood-level experiences

Undiscovered Sunsets was a long time in the making, even if I myself didn’t realize it. During my time at the University of Northern Iowa, I studied abroad in New Zealand. Upon graduating, I bought a one-way ticket to France, lived with a French family and studied with classmates from Turkey, China, Russia, Germany, Italy, and everywhere in between. In 2010 I began teaching English as a foreign language. This job quickly took me to China, where English teachers were in high demand and within three years, I began working in a 5-star hotel, speaking Mandarin throughout most of my day. In total, I lived abroad for 7 years.

I consider Undiscovered Sunsets to be the perfect mélange of my personal experience traveling the world and my professional experience working in the hospitality industry.

I look forward to designing your next adventure!
